Work life Balance: How to manage life as a Working Mum

Maintaining a work life balance as a full-time working mum can be a challenge. We’re expected to be everything to everyone in the house. From Cleaner to cook, to taxi driver to problem solver, it all falls on us! As much as you want to see your children in their school play, make dinner, do the food shopping, clean the house and prepare for that upcoming business meeting — maybe it’s time to recognise that it doesn’t all have to get done by you and that you can also have your own life?

So, What does it mean to have Work Life Balance?

Don’t fall off your chair with laughter, You might be thinking “work life balance doesn’t even exist!

There’s this idea that us working mums are real-life superhero’s with magical powers and endless energy, the truth is that we are not immune to burnout.

So, what’s work life balance?

It’s about having a good balance of a personal and professional life without allowing one to takeover the other.

That doesn’t mean life is always going to run smoothly, it just means that your goal is always to have a good balance of all of the things that are important to you in your life

Now that we are all living in the age of social media, there is a pressure to be perfect because of what we see other mums appear to do, but of course we only show the best stuff on social media don’t we?

Why Work Life Balance Is so Important?

Most people can juggle it all for ‘A Season’ of their lives right? but thats all it can be because its unsustainable and will cause you problems in the long term, Here's my top 5 tips on why having a good work life balance is so good for you:

1) Experience Fewer Health Problems

Our immune system is the first to be compromised when we are run down, tired and stressed, and let’s not forget about our Mental Health, its very easy to slip into the slumps of depression when life becomes overwhelming and unmanageable. Sadly sometimes stress is unavoidable in our lives and maybe it's something that all of us can do to learn to manage stress in our lives.

2) Better Physical & Wellbeing Health

Taking time out to look after yourself by exercising, eating well, relaxing and doing things for yourself will contribute to increased happiness, Your body is the only place you have to live so treat it with the upmost care.

3) Improved Productivity

Have you ever felt like you’ve been running around like a headless chicken all day and when you’ve finally sat down at the end of the day you didn’t actually get much done? Improving your Productivity comes down to achieving quality over quantity.

By having a work life balance you’ll be able to increase your productivity because you would have been able to give yourself a chance to rest or do something for yourself so now you can dutifully focus on the task at hand.

4) Mindfulness, Gratitude and Appreciation

When you have a balance of doing things you enjoy with the responsibilities of everyday life you will find that appreciation and gratitude are easier to come by and these are emotions that make us feel good, thus attending to our mental well-being.

5) YOLO (You Only Live Once)

In the UK the average life expectancy for Females is 82.9 years, When your time is up thats it, So why spend your time here in a negative state?

My Work Life Balance Tips

1. There is no perfection, Only beautiful versions of brokenness

If you feel that everything you do has to perfect all the time, stop this now.

Doing something “perfectly” is completely subjective, who does it need to be perfect for, yourself or someone else? This is an unrealistic expectation to have on yourself and it will only result in you feeling miserable.

2. Go Unplugged

We live in a world where it’s become increasingly difficult to ‘switch off’ because of how easy technology has made it for us to constantly be communicating and working, it's so distracting. Social Media has a hold over us so that we are never ‘Present’ in the moment.

So when it’s family time or when you’re with a partner or mate, make the most of that time together and do not get distracted by the latest notifications on Facebook!

3. Work The Body And Mind

Getting regular exercise, eating well and meditating will look after your physical and mental health. I took up Marathon Running at the age of 41, I’d never run more than 2 miles without stopping, now six years later I’m training for my ninth Marathon, yes my physical fitness is the best its ever been, but the massive shift for me it the improvement in my Mental Health

4. Limit Distractions

It’s so easy to procrastinate or find yourself checking your phone or social media every 10 minutes, that’s why you have to be disciplined with how you spend your time.

Set time limits for checking and responding to emails or making phone calls, and honour it.

Make sure you focus on one thing at a time so as to not get caught up in the next task without finishing what you had first started.

Take scheduled breaks and use that time for catching up on personal messages or checking social media.

5. Work Smarter, Not Harder

Manage your time for the long term by setting yearly, monthly, weekly and daily goals for your family and work life and put a plan in place to achieve both types of goals, when you work the plan the plan works!

6. Learn To Say NO

This was a game-changer for me — learning that I don’t have to please everyone has been so liberating.

Saying “no” does not mean you’re being selfish, on the contrary — it means you respect your own time and the commitments you’ve already made.

7. Leave Work At Work

When you leave work for the day make sure you don’t bring work home with you. This may be more tricky if you work for yourself (or if you work from home), but it’s all about boundaries and it’s essential to have some in place.

8. Surround Yourself With People Who Are Uplifting

It's a known fact we become a sum of the five people that we spend the most time with, Surround yourself with people that uplift you and not with people that drain you!

9. Be Present

This goes for whatever you’re doing in your day, be it work, a school function, cooking, chores etc. — make the most of the moment, and be there consciously doing what you’re doing.

10. Create Family Memories makes Work Life Balance Easier

Something that completely changed my life and lifestyle was being introduced to a business opportunity with Forever Living Products. After nearly fifteen years of the ‘Rat Race’ I finally found a way to work from home, work flexible hours around my family but also to be my own boss build a successful business.

In closing I believe that the consequence of the Coronuvirus and the whole Lockdown period has given people the opportunity to stop and look at what they’ve been doing and the outcome is that so many people just don’t want to return to the rat race and would much rather work flexibly from home.

So, if you’d like to find out more about the business that I’m involved in I’d love to hear from you, You can get in touch with me at: amandaegan@flp.com
